William Baxter Buxton

William B. (Bill) Buxton Oct. 3, 1943 – Nov. 19, 2017 The Honorable William B. (Bill) Buxton, of Duncan, Oklahoma passed away in Oklahoma City on November 19th, 2017 surrounded by his family. He was 74. Bill is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years Kathy; daughter Ginny Searcy and her husband Conner and their children Will, Brooks and Ellie Searcy of Dallas, TX; son Jim Buxton and his wife Katherine and their daughters Kneely and Gracie Buxton of Oklahoma City, OK. Bill was born on October 5, 1943 in Oklahoma City, OK to James and Betty Buxton. He graduated from Ada High School where he received the honor of being named “Mr. Cougar”. Following graduation he attended the University of Tulsa and the University of Tulsa School of Law receiving his law degree in 1969. After serving as Chief of Staff for then candidate Governor David Hall, he and Kathy moved to Duncan where he practiced law as a private attorney with the firm of Leach, Sullivan, Green & Buxton; served two times as First Assistant District Attorney for Stephens County; and was a Special District Judge for Sixth Judicial District of Oklahoma for 14 years. During his years on the bench he established the Stephens County Drug Court, which has impacted the lives of thousands in the community, and was on the ethics committee of the Oklahoma Bar Association. After his retirement from the bench in 2006 he continued to serve the community by teaching government classes at Cameron University and providing pro-bono legal services at his law firm where he practiced with his dear friend John Ray Green until his death. An ardent supporter of Duncan Demon Athletics, he was inducted into the Duncan Athletic Hall of Fame in 1996 and was the “Voice of the Duncan Demons” football team providing color commentary on the radio for KRHD for over 20 years. He and Kathy are members of All Saints Episcopal Church where Bill served on the vestry. A funeral is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on Friday, November 24th 2017 at All Saints Episcopal Church at 809 W. Cedar, Duncan, Oklahoma, with a reception to follow at the Duncan Golf and Tennis Club. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Legal Aid Services of Oklahoma, 323 S.W. C Ave. Lawton, OK 73501.
