Rodney Newlin Cherry, 90, of Comanche departed this life September 19, 2014 in the Lawton Veterans Center. Graveside memorial services will be 2:00 PM Saturday in the Fairlawn Cemetery at Comanche. Services are under the direction of the Bailes-Polk Funeral Home. Rodney was born November 2, 1923 at Comanche, Oklahoma the son of William Carlton and Edith Marie (Barry) Cherry. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and the United State Army During the Korean Conflict. He attended the Cameron University after his retirement and at the age of 68 and graduated with a Bachelor Degree with honors. He was a surveyor during his time in the military and was his life long career. He loved to read and always loved his work. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers John and W.C. and a sister Gwendolyn. Survivors include his children Rodna Cherry of Comanche, Carla Marie Cherry of Walters, Rebecca "Boo" Cherry-Ledford of Walters, Marilyn Cherry Red Elk of Walters, Fred McCarter of Port Orchard, Washington, Ray Gene McCarter of Marlow and Johnnie Thompson of Bonneau Bay South Carolina; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren as well as other family and a host of friends.
