Mary Edith Black English departed this life on the afternoon of April 13, 2020 at the age of 92. She had been in declining health and had recently been under the care of hospice while living with her loving and devoted daughter in Ft. Worth, Texas.
Mary was born on April 30, 1927 in Franklin County, Texas to Dallas T. and Annie Lee Black. She had three sisters and four brothers, all of whom proceeded her in death.
On August 6, 1947 she married L.B. “Bert†English in Winnsboro, Texas. She and L.B. were married for 55 years until his death in February of 2003. They had two children who survive her: a son, Tom English and wife Nancy of Houston, Texas and daughter, Kathy Bridwell and husband Toby of Ft. Worth, Texas. Additionally, she leaves three grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren, and several loving nieces and nephews to mourn her passing.
After her marriage, Mary became a devoted and hard-working wife who took care of her home and provided wonderful, tender, and unfailing support for her husband and two children. She moved several times to and from towns in North and West Texas, always making friends along the way and having a positive and loving influence on the folks she met, especially those she “went to church withâ€. She was a life-long member of the Church of Christ and was regular in her attendance and participation wherever she worshiped until health issues made that too difficult.
Some of her best years were spent in Duncan, Oklahoma where she and L.B. had retired. For several years she loved spending time in the peach orchard at their farm in Bray, Oklahoma. She knew every kind of peach and was happy to share them with anyone who came to visit the farm. And if they couldn't’t come to visit, she would be sure to take some to as many folks as she could.
Mary loved her friends at the East Side Church of Christ in Duncan. The church at that time had served as the center of her life, and as she grew older, she became more endeared to those with whom she worshiped. Her neighbors in town became dear friends and when she lost L.B., they became even more significant in her life.
She took great pleasure in her grandchildren and let them all know that they were special. When she was able to be with them, she would play right along with them. It was important for her to try to keep up with what they were doing as they began to grow older and mature. As would be expected, she always had loving things to say about each one of them. She also set a wonderful example as a Mother-in-Law, and always saw the very best in her “extended childrenâ€. She treated them respectfully and with love.
Mary will be missed by so many. She lived a life completely true to who she saw herself to be. There was nothing pretentious about her life; she was at her best when serving and showing love and concern for others. All who knew her would often hear her softly singing to herself the beautiful songs of the church that she loved. She lived a good life of devotion, dedication, and of loving and helping others.
Graveside services will be 2:00 PM Friday in Marlow Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Bailes-Polk Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers donation may be made to the Tipton Chidrens's Home, P.O. Box 370 Tipton, Oklahoma 73570.
