George Washington “Sam” Battles, 87, of Duncan entered his heavenly home on Sunday, February 18th, 2018 in Elk Crossing Nursing and Rehabilitation.
Services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday in the New Hope Baptist Church West with Reverend Randy Southerland officiating. Interment will follow in the Duncan Cemetery under the direction of the Bailes-Polk Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends for visitation at the funeral home from 5-7 PM on Tuesday.
George was born July 15, 1930 at Wardville, Oklahoma to George Washington and Minnie (Christian) Battles. He was the youngest of ten children. His family moved to Duncan from southeastern Oklahoma in a covered wagon and a Model T car. George graduated from Duncan High School in 1949. He was very proud to be a member of the 49ers. He married Wanda Lou Masoner on April 18, 1949, and she preceded him in death on September 14, 2009. He was also preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and two sisters.
George and Wanda were charter members of Trinity Baptist Church when it was formed as a mission of Immanuel Baptist Church. There he served as a deacon and Sunday School superintendent. In later years he and Wanda were faithful members at New Hope Baptist Church.
George was a lifelong employee of Halliburton and retired as a line foreman in the welding shop. After retiring, he pursued his dream of training thoroughbred horses. Together with his son Rod, George enjoyed years of raising and training their own horses.
Survivors include his son Rod Battles and his wife Diane of Duncan, Oklahoma; daughter Micaela Wood and her husband Danny of Marlow, Oklahoma. Surviving grandchildren include Jana Krautbauer and husband Randy of Marlow, Oklahoma; Jason Battles and wife Ashley of Bixby, Oklahoma; Jon French and wife Helen of Colorado Springs; Jamie Graham and husband Cody of Amarillo, TX; Rebecca Moss and husband Rodney of Kilgore, TX; and Eric French of Ardmore. Surviving great grandchildren include Cody Krautbauer of Oklahoma City; Marissa Krautbauer of Marlow; Wiley Battles and Lily Battles of Bixby; Alexa French of Chickasha; Greggory French of Duncan; and Corbin Graham, Blake Graham, Chandler Graham of Amarillo. George is also survived by a sister Pauline Dove of Duncan, a special “daughter” Connie Frizzell of Duncan, numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Memorial donations may be made to the Chickasaw Senior Citizens Center in Duncan.
