Charles Fredrick Maxwell Jr., age 77, of Velma, Ok departed his earthly home while in Duncan Regional Hospital on Saturday, August 6, 2022.
Services will be at 10:00 am, Saturday, August 13 at Countryside Freewill Baptist Church with Pastor Garrison Hopper officiating. Graveside will follow at the New Velma Cemetery under the direction of Bailes-Polk Funeral Home. Family will receive visitors Friday, August 12 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at the Alexander-Gray Funeral Home in Velma.
Charles was born September 3, 1944 in Purcell, Ok to Fred and Pauline (Hoffman) Maxwell where he was the oldest of six children. Charles married Patsy Amos December 24, 1974 in Siloam Springs, Arkansas and was married 22 years til Patsy's passing in 1997. He was a member of Countryside Freewill Baptist Church in Velma.
Charles was a 1962 graduate of Velma-Alma High School where he was well known for being an excellent basketball player leading his team to the state basketball championship during the 1961-1962 school year. He then proudly served his country as a medical specialist with the Pacific Air Forces in the United States Air Force from 1962-1968. He was stationed at Royal Thai AFB in Bangkok, Thailand. Once out of the service, Charles worked different odd jobs before settling down with his family in Velma, Ok in 1974. He then managed Gordon White Lumber in Ratliff City, Ok for over 20 years. Charles was an excellent salesman and although he had one of the smallest stores, his bosses raved that he was the reason it was the most profitable. Charles was an avid bass fisherman not only fishing local tournaments, but Bass Master and Angler's Choice tournaments as well. If he wasn't home, everyone knew he was out on a lake somewhere. Charles was also a skilled pool player and loved playing three-ball tournaments. In 1989, Charles became the mayor of Velma where he made many improvements over the years and was passionate about helping the town he loved. In 1995, he earned recognition for his hard work by being chosen as a finalist for the Oklahoma Mayor of the Year Award. He served as mayor of Velma from 1989-1999.
Charles is greeted in heaven by his wife Patsy, his parents Fred & Pauline, brothers Kenneth & Carlis, little sister Annette O'Neal, and his precious granddaughter Braylee Rae Henry.
He is survived by his two daughters; Renee Henson & husband JB of Velma, and Valerie Richardson & husband Dewayne of Comanche; brother Mitchell Maxwell & wife Judy of Collinsville, Ok; sister Joyce Parreira & husband Danny of Hanford, California; grandchildren Jaycee & Jackson Henson of Velma, Jayden Cox & husband Dylan of Arkansas City, KS, Carly Richardson of Dallas, TX, and great grandchildren Leighton & Lawsyn Cox of Arkansas City, KS.
Pallbearers will be his life long best friend Joe Mitchell, Chad Williams, Kyle Springer, Roger Martin, Billy Henry and his beloved grandson Jackson Henson (referred by his PaPa as "high pockets"). Honorary pallbearers will be Duke Darling, Bo Lumbert and Tony Carter.
